Endodontic Retreatment In West Chester
An endodontic retreatment procedure can restore your root canal and save your natural tooth so you can start smiling again.
When is Endodontic Retreatment Indicated?
Retreatment may be indicated if you develop a toothache or your general dentist diagnoses an abscess on a tooth that has previously been root canal treated.
Endodontic retreatment is a specialized procedure utilizing a dental microscope that addresses reinfection of a previous root canal.
While initial root canals have a 95% success rate, some cases can require retreatment due to recontamination, missed canals, persistent discomfort or other anatomical complications. In these instances, there are still options to save the natural tooth, such as endodontic retreatment.
The Endodontic Retreatment Process
Consultation
Consultation
During your comprehensive consultation, your endodontist will use advanced diagnostic imaging (including 3-D CBCT scans) and clinical findings to present you with treatment options and prognoses. Should you decide to proceed with retreatment, you will be numbed with local anesthesia. Your endodontist will discuss sedation options with you before starting the procedure.
Disinfection and Refilling
Disinfection and Refilling
Through a state-of-the-art Zeiss Extaro microscope, your endodontist will atraumatically create a small hole to allow for removal and disinfection of the old, contaminated root canal filling materials. In appropriate cases, Sonendo's Gentle Wave technology may be employed to aid in this process. Upon completion of a thorough cleansing, the canal spaces will be sealed with biocompatible root filling materials such as Bioceramics and gutta percha. Finally, a temporary filling will be placed on the chewing surface of the tooth.

Although it’s rare, root canal treatment can fail. If there is any remaining bacteria that wasn’t removed during the initial root canal, the tooth infection may return. Additionally, if a new cavity forms, or a well-sealed restoration is never placed after the initial root canal is completed, the canal space can be re-infected. If this happens, a retreatment could be necessary.
No! Although it’s a common myth that retreatment hurts, it’s actually the pre-existing infection that is painful. With modern dental techniques and technology, retreatment is no more uncomfortable than getting a dental filling. Not only will your mouth be numbed completely, but you can also opt to be sedated during the procedure. Overall, retreatment is the best way to alleviate the pain and discomfort of a re-infected tooth.
Endodontic Retreatment is usually covered, at least in part, by most dental insurance plans. However, it’s always a good idea to get in touch with your insurance provider to gain a thorough understanding of your benefits, and to determine if Endodontics of West Chester is in network with your plan.
